As Minnesota's first Black woman realtor in 1915, she experienced firsthand the unfair housing practices used against Black people. Not being able to do anything about it, she was inspired to become a lawyer. In 1921, at just thirty-five years old, she transformed her real estate office into a law office. She won her very first case, helping a Black family earn the rightful deed to their home. Lena worked as a civil rights lawyer until her death in 1966.
