The council produced canons aimed at reforming and protecting the Church: it mandated solemn celebration of the apostles' feasts and observance of established fast vigils; prohibited secular courts (placita) from meeting on Sundays, major feasts, and specific fast periods to ensure attendance at worship; barred secular bans from interfering with those going to or from church; established a threefold admonition and oath procedure for priests or deacons suspected of misconduct; forbade private self-imposed fasts as ostentatious unless permitted by a bishop (except one special day); and declared that bishops who knowingly communed with excommunicates would themselves be excommunicated until tried at the next synod.
