Born in Balkh in 1207, he left with his family in 1219 and travelled west, first settling in Zarandeh and eventually making Konia, capital of the western Seljuk empire, his home.Under the influence of Burhan-e-din Tirmidhi, Rumi embraced Sufism and progressed through the stages of the mystical life. After his guide?s death in 1240, he became a shaykh and attracted disciples. His encounter with the wandering dervish Shams Tabrizi in 1244 led to a close companionship that lasted two years. Shams?s departures and eventual disappearance in 1247 deeply affected Rumi, who composed a collection of mystical odes in his name.
