Sarik Tara, born in 1930 in Skopje, Macedonia, arrived in Istanbul in 1942, where he was joined two years later by his parents: his mother Mahmure, the daughter of the well-respected and affluent Turkish family Kumbaraci from Skopje, and his father Fevzi Haci Hamzi?, a lawyer from the Sanjak town of Priboj. Whe…n he came to Turkey in 1944, Fevzi Haci Hamzic changed his surname to Tara, after the Tara River, which for its greatest part flows through Montenegro. The family came from their Skopje splendor, but was met by almost fifteen years of poverty and misery in Istanbul. Still, Sarik graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the Istanbul Technical University and in 1957 founded a company that has carried the name ENKA since 1961. Today, ENKA is one of the world's most powerful engineering and energy investment companies, and Sarik Tara, according to *Forbes*, has for years been among the richest people in the world. Sarik Tara was a close friend with two of the most important Turkish prime ministers of the twentieth century, Adnan Menderes and Turgut Özal, and has, from the early 1970's, been an active participant in international political and economic events. He had an influential role in bringing Turkey and Greece closer together in the late 1980's, as well as in the then historic opening of the European Union towards Turkey at its Helsinki summit in 1999. Therefore, Ivica ?iki?'s book is not only an inspiring story of success and a fascinating life, but also an outline of the turbulent Turkish-Balkan political history of the twentieth century.
