He opposed germ theory for cholera, favoring environmental causes. Fayrer contributed significantly to public health, zoology, and epidemiology, and helped establish Calcutta's zoological garden. A Fellow of the Royal Society, he wrote extensively on Indian medicine and venomous snakes. He died in Cornwall at age 82.
