Zustand: as new. Text by Benno Tempel, Friederieke Sanders Taylor & Jeroen Dijkstra. [The Hague] : L.S. Editions &The Hague : Livingstone Gallery, 2011. Orig. printed wrappers. 58 pp. (chiefly) illustrations. 21 x 30 cm. - Raquel Maulwurf (Madrid, 1975) has made a name for herself with large scale charcoal drawings of ruined cit…ies. She captures the devastating aftermath of war, terrorism and weaponry in all their horror. However, in her recent work Maulwurf has turned from the city towards nature - at a moment when she herself moves to New York. In the city that never sleeps, Maulwurf felt a drive to take up new themes - themes in which nature is gaining prominence. Forest views and seascapes are worked out in series. In New York's urban jungle. Maulwurf's focus shifts towards depicting the harm mankind inflicts on his environment. The question is whether the primal force of nature will ultimately win; will nature emerge stronger from the destructive forces of man? In a sense, these themes could be a metaphor for Maulwurf's own working method, in which creation and destruction go hand in hand. In th seascapes, for instance, she literally attacks the board she works on. The violent breakers are built up by using heavy strokes of charcoal. Working the museum board with either a box cutter or sandpaper exposes the cor of the board. From the scratched surface arises the purest white, forming the foam of waves. Apart from seas and forests, New York has also brought new urban themes to Maulwurf's work. The drawing The End of Snow shows the transformation the city undergoes when the infamous snowstorms seize control. Maulwurf's Moving Landscapes are based on photographs of scenery taken from inside a moving car. These semi-abstract futuristic drawings evoke a sense of extreme velocity. This theme in particular showcases the artist's virtuosity and skills . The creative process itself is of great importance to the artist. Discussing her drawings she talks about how she feels almost engulfed by her large scale works, because of how she works very close up to the board. While drawing, she smudges the charcoal with her bare hands, sometimes abrading her skin until she almost bleeds. During this process the charcoal creeps underneath her fingernails and seeps into the pores of her skin. This poses not only a physical challenge, it requires a vast amount of endurance and shows her extreme dedication to her work. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9789075884265. Keywords : ART.
