The introductions to each letter are generally sensible, and on the right scale. B. has a good eye for illuminating detail, and a tart manner with some of his more pretentious…authors. (?) What sort of reader? Perhaps classicist or medievalist undergraduates who wish to expand a little into a rich ?terra incognita? They will have to cope not only with an eccentric selection but also with texts which are often difficult and at times incomprehensible, largely for lack of modern critical editions.'
