Hardcover. Zustand: Very good to fine condition. First edition. Square Quarto. 299 (1)pp. Original color-illustrated boards with red lettering on spine, in original glassine dustjacket, white lettering on spine. Color-illustrated endpapers. Typographical design on double title page. First illustrated book dedicated to the work of Vik Muniz published in Brazil. Design by Victor Burton and Angelo Allevato Bottino. "Among contemporary artists, Vik Muniz's work is exemplary. He makes photographs of materials such as ash, sugar, chocolate, and wire. Before he photographs them, the materials themselves are made into images. And the images are often taken from previous images and occasionally even photographs. The ash picks out a painting by Caspar David Friedrich; the chocolate traces one of Namuth's photos of Pollock painting; the dirt is scraped and molded into an imitation of Coubert's 'Origin of the World.'" (James Elkins). Profusely illustrated with photographs of Muniz's uncanny photographs of 'objects' throughout, including early works, individuals, pictures of thread, of soil, of wire, sugar children, pictures of ink, pillows, beggars, of dust, of clouds and other Muniz creations. Contains bio and bibliography at rear. Text in Portuguese and English. Glassine jacket with light wear along edges, small chip and closed tear at head of spine.…
