Because das abo happens to be by far the commonest series of punchmarked coins, the catalogue will serve to identify most of the specimens available to collectors and students The basis of this work is the unpublished PhD thesis of Dr. Parmeshwarilal Gupta (1957), which for the first time listed all the then known varieties in this series of coins. This was supplemented in 1963 by his work on the Amaravati board of silver punchmarked coins. The present Catalogue is an updated version of these works is which Hardaker has redrawn all the symbols, subdivided and extended the sis original "periods", and adopted a new system of numbering The new varieties which have appeared since 1963 have also been incorporated. The Catalogue and the test represent the joint views of both authors Since our work began, many of the punchmarked coins covered here have been photographically recorded in works by Michael Mitchiner. In his book The Ancient and Classical World, the same symbol drawings and numbering system have been used as in the present work. Punchmarked coins are still on the frontier of numismatic research. In this situation a catalogue cannot be declared complete, as new varieties are likely to appear subsequently. The method of cataloguing employed here allows for new varieties to take their place without upsetting the general classification, thus hopefully prolonging the useful life of this as a reference work.
