Seine Arbeit wurde u.a. 1991 durch die Verleihung der John-Bates-Clark-Medaille für den besten Nachwuchswissenschaftler gewürdigt. 1998 erhielt Krugman die Ehrendoktorwürde der Freien Universität Berlin, und im Jahr 2000 wurde ihm in Nürnberg der Horst-Recktenwald-Preis für Nationalökonomie verliehen. Bereits mit 24 Jahren schloss er seine Promotion am renommierten Massachusetts Institute of Technologie (MIT) mit einer Arbeit über flexible Wechselkurse ab.
