The total number of entries included in the volume exceeds… 500 and can broadly be divided into two sections those dealing with the Western World and those relating to India. The entries dealing with the Western World belong to the Greek city states Roman Empire the Middle Ages Renaissance Reformation French Revolution Industrial Revolution Russian Revolution its aftermath and the Post Cold War era. The editors have tried to highlight the major contributions of acknowledged masters of political thought like Plato Aristotle Fathers of the Church Hobbes Locke Rousseau Machiavelli Hegel Marx Lenin Mao Washington and Jefferson. The editors have given due space to a number of thinkers who though not strictly political have substantially contributed to the growth of political thought. They hail mainly from philosophy sociology and economics. Entries from India include some outstanding rulers like Asoka Sher Shah Akbar and Shivaji. These rulers created conditions which were conducive to the evolution of a stable polity and enduring administrative institutions.
