This study presents a reading of Harold Pinters contribution to the emerging genre of the screenplay. Harold Pinter more than any other writer has contributed to this film based genre. His screenplays find their source in great works of fiction. A more responsive approach has been possible in analysing these screenplays as a variation of the original in form as well as in theme rather than consider them in relation to the fidelity to the source. Pinters screenplays are highly experimental. They almost become an analogue of the original. The study ultimately establishes that the screenplay can be read interpreted and assessed as a literary text. 162 pp.
