About the book:-a volume of translations from the Pali Suttas to the important series of which this work forms a part, the contributor has to face the difficulty of choosing from the stores of a nearly unknown literature a difficulty arising from the embarrassment, not of poverty, but of wealth. Author has endeavoured to make such a choice as would enable him to bring together into one volume a collection of texts which should be as complete a sample as one volume could afford of what the Buddhist scriptures, on the whole, contain. With this object in view he have refrained from confining myself to the most interesting books those, namely, which deal with the Noble Eightfold Path, the most essential, the most original, and the most attractive part of Gotama's teaching ; and he have chosen accordingly, besides the Sutta of the Foundation of the Kingdom of Righteousness (the Dhammacakkappavattana-Sutta), which treats of the Noble Path, six others which treat of other sides of the Buddhist system ; less interesting perhaps in their subject matter, but of no less historical valuem. Abaut the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843 1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the Pali Text Society. He took an active part in founding the British Academy and London School for Oriental Studies. He was born at Colchester in Essex, England, the eldest son of a Congregational clergyman from Wales, who was affectionately referred to as the Bishop of Essex. His mother, who died at the age of 37 following childbirth, had run the Sunday school at his father's church. In 1894 Rhys Davids married Caroline Augusta Foley, a noted P?li scholar. Unlike his wife, however, Rhys Davids was a critic and opponent of Theosophy. They had three children. In 1871 he was posted as Assistant Government Agent of Nuwarakalaviya, where Anuradhapura was the administrative centre.
