Hardcover. Zustand: New. China's occupation of Tibet is the basis of the Chinese claim to almost the entire Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which it alleges is 'Chinese territory occupied by India'. Its claim to Aksai Chin in the north-west is based on its occupation of eastern Turkestan. These two territorial disputes have led to the unresolved boundary issue between India and the People's Republic of China. China at the time had come to the belief that India was 'nibbling away' at Chinese territory along Tibet's frontiers with India, and even more importantly, Chairman Mao Zedong of China believed that the 'bourgeois' Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, needed to be 'put in his place'. Inability to agree on a common border led to the limited border war between China and India in October-November 1962, which China has officially named 'A Counter-attack in Self-Defence'. This war resulted in a humiliating defeat for India. China-India relations have since remained semi-hostage to the unresolved territory dispute and its resultant border dispute. A re-counting of these issues make up the first of the three stand-alone parts of this book. A summarized history of the 1962 Sino-Indian war, along with an analysis of the conduct of the war by India, forms the second part. The third part is devoted to the future; starting from the existing China-India diplomatic impasse and examining its strategic implications for India. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gautam Das attended schools in Delhi, Edinburgh, Pune, and Darjeeling. He was in the Indian Army from 1968 to 1991. He was an infantry officer in the 11th Gorkha Rifles and served along the Indo-Tibet border, as well as dealt with the entire Sino-Indian boundary question on General Staff assignments. In November 1975 he was tasked by the Army Commander (GOC-in-C) of India's Eastern Command to study the Sino-Indian border dispute in the eastern sector, from both the Indian and the Chinese points of view, and to personally brief the Prime Minister.…
