Recipient's owner label on front pastedown, page edges modestly foxed and a bit of light foxing on the preliminary and terminal leaves, near fine in blue cloth with spine gilt, in a jacket that is good only, due to a short tear on the cover panel and a 6" tear on the unprinted rear panel, both of which have been neatly and archivally repaired. A presentation copy, Inscribed by Ignas Miniotas, skipper of one of the yachts, to the Mayor of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, thanking him for the city's hospitality. Laid in is a 1989 Typed Letter Signed from the Committee Chairman of the Lithuanian Liberty Sail Committee, also thanking the mayor for the hospitality of his town: ".our Lithuanian yachtmen. truly felt welcome." Also laid in is a fact sheet for a proposed (and ultimately successful) 1992 around-the-world trip planned by Lithuanian sailors and a 1992 Grand Regatta Columbus envelope with U.S. and Lithuanian stamps, and customs stamps from Bermuda, Cádiz, and San Juan (Puerto Rico). Business card of Kazimieras Motieka, "Vice President of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania," stapled onto an early leaf. In March of 1990, Lithuania became the first of 15 Soviet republics to declare independence; interestingly, in the 1989 TLS to the Mayor of Atlantic Highlands, Chairman Gvildys writes that he takes the city's hospitality as "moral support of the Lithuanian quest for liberty." One of a reported 20,000 copies printed, although *OCLC* locates only 11 copies over three records, seven in the U.S. An uncommon and interesting book, with political interest and a nice association.
