EMBEDDED ART is a…book accompanying an exhibition of the same name, taking place from January - March 2009 at the Akademie der Kiinste Berlin. The exhibition curators Cecilia Wee, Janneke Schonenbach, Moritz von Rappard and Olaf Arndt, invited 41 artists to express their vision of "art in the name of security". All the projects resulted from commissions, asking the artists to work "embedded" with defence and security companies, in danger zones and perusing archives on global security issues. Since all artwork is commissioned exclusively for the Berlin show, the editors have decided not to include work-in-progress documentation, but to produce a DVD of the final works, which can be ordered from the publisher in March 2009. In Part I, the three texts contain condensed formulations of the artistic content and motivations underpinning EMBEDDED ART, guided by the three keywords: threat, response, shift. For Part II, the Politics of Fear, the editors commissioned a variety of essays that illustrate the way state institutions and private corporations respond to the threats mentioned above. These essays, in the main, examine how current responses will cause societal and legal shifts in democratic countries.
