You design a perfect underworld of risk and danger in accordance to what you wish to empty out - the perfect suburb. . From this and other memories, Mike Kelley designed and assembled architectural models of every school he has ever attended, incorporating the house he grew up in, for the project Educational Complex. The task of laying down its foundations, from only memories of hallways, classrooms and gymnasiums once used, proved to lead to dysfunctional structures, unstable forms, disconnected rooms, mazes of inaccessible blocks, doorways into emptiness, gravity-defying walls, in short, to a building that would be impossible to build. Approaching the models as mock-ups to be used for actualizing real buildings, Kelley looked to floor plans and photographs of his former schools to help stabilize the majority of incomprehensible spatial relations that were left unremembered. Even with the aid of documents, when large proportions of the outlined areas were still hazy and ambiguous, Educational Complex came to be about how to build the small portions of remembered space in structural relationship to the vast 80% of forgotten space; about how to design a sprawling compound of one's youth, with blocked-out memory lapses as its primary architectural components. .
