Edited by Peter Rück (1934-2010), Professor of Historical Auxiliary Sciences and Archival Studies at Philipps-Universität Marburg and director of the Lichtbildarchiv älterer Originalurkunden bis 1250, the volume grew out of the Fourth Marburg Colloquium for Historical Auxiliary Sciences held in September 1990 and was subsequently expanded into a major reference work bringing together forty-three specialists from an exceptionally broad range of disciplines. The contributors include leading palaeographers, typographers, graphonomists, forensic document examiners, psychologists, linguists, semioticians, and historians of writing, reflecting Rück's conviction that script must be studied simultaneously as a historical, visual, linguistic, cognitive, and physical phenomenon.
