The country is made up of people, and I want to make visible each and every one of them and honor them through my photographs' says Alexander Chekmenev.; Seit den 1990er-Jahren dokumentiert Alexander Chekmenev (\* 1969) das Leben in der Ukraine. Seine Arbeiten wurden in der New York Times, dem TIME Magazine, im The Guardian und vielen anderen internationalen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften veröffentlicht. In Faces of War widmet er sich dem Leben der ukrainischen Bevölkerung und den individuellen Schicksalen in Folge des russischen Angriffskrieges. Mit großer Sensibilität porträtiert Chekmenev jene, die dem Krieg im Alltag trotzen, die sich in provisorischen Volksküchen engagieren, sich in U-Bahn-Schächten vor den anhaltenden Angriffen zu schützen versuchen oder aktiv zur Versorgung der Mitmenschen beitragen. Die ausdrucksstarken Fotografien entstehen in der Dunkelheit. Ausschließlich mit einer Taschenlampe beleuchtet der Fotograf das Gesicht und die Hände der Porträtierten. Während im dunklen Hintergrund der Krieg und seine Auswirkungen zu erahnen sind, rückt durch die Beleuchtung in den Vordergrund, was dem Fotografen am wichtigsten ist: 'Für mich steht der Mensch immer an erster Stelle. Das Land besteht aus Menschen, und ich möchte jeden und jede einzelne durch meine Fotografien sichtbar machen und würdigen', so Alexander Chekmenev.
