As a rule, the MAK value is given as an average concentration for a period of up to one working day or shift. MAK values are established on the basis of the effects of chemical substances; when possible, practical aspects of the industrial processes and the resulting exposure patterns are also taken into account. Scientific criteria for the prevention of adverse effects on health are decisive, not technical and economic feasibility.
