His commen- taries on Aristotle's logical, bio- logical, ethical, and political trea- tises apart from short extracts have never been translated into a modern language. Anthony Preus here presents English transla- tions of the commentaries on Aristotle's Movement and Pro- gression of Animals, together with versions of Aristotle's trea- tises in conformity with the commentaries. The Introduction places Michael of Ephesus into his historical setting, tracing some of his predecessors in the philosophical tradition of Byzan- tium, and suggesting some pos- sible influences of his work among the scholastics and in the Renaissance. Extensive notes dis- cuss questions of philology, philosophy, and the history of science. The volume is com- pleted with a bibliography and indices. Michael of Ephesus was a major link in the transmission of Aristotle's text and tradition to the West; the Movement and Progression of Animals were not commented upon in antiquity, nor were they known to the Muslims, so Michael's commen- taries are the only extant pre- scholastic commentaries on these treatises. They serve as examples of a certain Byzantine philoso- phical and scientific tradition which relies heavily on the work of Alexander of Aphrodisias and other Aristotelians of late anti- quity; in Michael's work, neither Christianity nor Neoplatonism is strongly influential. Rather, the commentator has attempted and largely succeeded in recreating the original spirit of Aristotle's text. ISBN 9783487070735 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 782.
