Of the great houses in the rue de Varenne, described by eighteenth century guide-books as "the most remarkable in the kingdom" the Hôtel Biron, the Rodin Museum since the first World War, with its stone walls, its greenery, its lawns and arbours suspended in time, seems to belong to a dream world, a world of delectation and happiness. Its history dates back to 1728, when Abraham Peyrenc de Moras, a singular individual who might have stepped out of Lesage or Beaumarchais, grown rich by speculating on paper money and enjoying an international hearing, ordered the construction of "the most splendid house there was to be found in Paris". The plans attributed to Jacques Gabriel, then the Inspector of the King's Buildings, with whom the financier had carried out a number of transactions, were executed in two years by another famous architect, Jean Aubert.
