At the heart of the European continent, Prague has been the crossroad for a broad range of artistic, philosophical, and social currents for centuries. This mythic city is also famous for having given rise to one of the most original and prolific expressions of Art Nouveau and Symbolism in fin-de-siecle Europe?one that reflected the ethnic diversity and uneasy social alliances of the Hapsburg monarchy. This timely new book brilliantly presents the visual arts and literature of this period against the explosive background of the pre-war years. Author Petr Wittlich offers a penetrating analysis of the intense social and political turmoil of the 1890s, when Decadence was a major preoccupation among artistic and literary circles. He discusses the collaborators of the avant-garde Moderni revue and the members of the Manes Union, who were at the center of heated debates on Symbolism, Decadence, sexuality, the condition of women, and the syndrome of melancholy. He ties trends in art and literature to developments in architecture and design, following their transition from late historicism to Art Nouveau through the activities of the School of Decorative Arts, involved in graphics, sculpture, glasswork, and ceramics. Wittlich describes the efforts to revive the national art, which he terms the "emotive style." Czech folk traditions merged with Viennese and French influences to inspire Prague's extensive architectural, painting, and sculptural programs. After 1910 the influence of Gauguin, Cezanne, and Viennese models led to a new synthesis in Czech architecture and the decorative arts. New geometric and decorative elements developed, shaped by Cubism and Neo-Classicism. Meanwhile, painting was marked by a second Symbolist wave, although links with Paris meant that the precepts of Fauvism and Cubism also became known in Prague. Much of the material in this pioneering study will be new to Western readers. While highlighting national particularities, this beautifully illustrated panorama of the arts in Prague increases our understanding of European Symbolism and sheds new light on the spread of Art Nouveau in Europe. The specially commissioned photo-graphs reveal the splendors of one of the great cultural capitals of Europe.
