About the book >.>.> The Ballast Project is an art project by the Glasgow-based artist Nathan Coley, which he conceived and executed for the Government Buildings Agency as a com…mission for Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the National Maritime Museum, in Amsterdam. The project was realized through the Per-centage for Art Programme - an art policy first established in 1951 - which earmarks a percentage of the construction budget of a new building, a renovation or the purchase of state buildings to commissioned visual art. The implemen tation of the Percentage Programme is the responsibility of the Atelier of the Chief Government Architect. With the renovation of Het Scheepvaartmuseum, carried out by architect Liesbeth van der Pol, budget became avai lable for an art project. In October 2011, at the reopening of Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the permanent sculpture by Nathan Coley - which is situated in one of the stairwells of the museum - was presented to the audience for the first time.
