Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. "While the Allied and Axis forces were slugging it out up the length of Italy, with Allied progress often painfully slow in the face of fierce German resistance, a parallel war, of which most fighting troops were unaware, took place behind the scenes. It was waged between Axis intelligence organisations, desperate to obtain tactical and strategic information on Allied plans (more so as their air force gradually became eliminated), and the Allied military counter-intelligence assembled to thwart their espionage and sabotage. This side of war history has hitherto seldom been covered in detail. It includes a multitude of individual incidents, ranging from the deadly serious to the downright comic. Using mainly Italian agents dropped in by parachute behind the Allied lines, landed by boat at night or, more frequently, sent across the front lines in sparsely-held areas as 'refugees', the Germans devoted immense effort to getting results, but the Allies had the upper hand, each month arresting some 50 agents often given away by poor training, or crass mistakes by German Intelligence staff, both Abwehr and Sicherheitsdienst. The book is illustrated by some unique photographs, never before published, of Axis intelligence officers and of some of their agents."
