In this work, the authors examine the "backstory" behind this myth. They show how in the late 1920s the Soviet Comintern decided to make the film capital a prime target; authors such as Budd Schulberg, Ring Lardner, Jr., Maurice Rapf and other young radicals journied to the USSR in the early 1930s, underwent a political conversion, and returned to Hollywood preaching a Soviet gospel. The reader is taken inside the cells and discussion groups that Communist Party Members formed, the guilds and unions they tried to take over, and the studios they aimed to influence.
