Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Historically significant signed copy of Sally McClain's Navajo Weapon: The Navajo Code Talkers, signed in ink on the title page by five identified WWII Navajo Code Talkers: Bill Toledo, Albert Smith, Alfred K. Newman Sr., Robert Walley Sr., and Jack Jones. Although this appears to be a later printing, believed to be the 13th printing, the collectible importance of this copy rests not in the printing statement but in its direct association with five Navajo Code Talkers whose service formed part of one of the most important military communications achievements of World War II. The Navajo Code Talkers transmitted battlefield communications in the Pacific Theater using a code based on the Navajo language. The National Archives records that Japan's chief of intelligence later acknowledged that the Navajo code was one they were never able to break. The Code Talkers' work remained classified until 1968, and national recognition followed decades later, with Congressional Gold Medals awarded to the original twenty-nine Code Talkers and Congressional Silver Medals awarded to later qualified Code Talkers. Signed by Five WWII Navajo Code Talkers: Bill Toledo ? Navajo Code Talker, U.S. Marine Corps, 3rd Marine Division. Toledo served in the Pacific and is documented as having taken part in the campaigns at Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. Albert Smith ? Navajo Code Talker, U.S. Marine Corps, 4th Marine Division / 23rd Regiment. Smith enlisted in 1943 and is documented as having served in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima campaigns. Alfred K. Newman Sr. ? Navajo Code Talker, U.S. Marine Corps, 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Newman served from 1943 to 1945 and is documented with wartime duty including Bougainville, Guam, Iwo Jima, Kwajalein, Enewetak, New Georgia, and New Caledonia. Robert Walley Sr. ? Navajo Code Talker, U.S. Marine Corps, 6th Marine Division and Marine Raider. Walley served from 1943 to 1945 and fought at Bougainville, Guam, Okinawa, and during the occupation of Emirau Island. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Congressional Silver Medal. US Marine Raider Association Jack Jones ? Navajo Code Talker, U.S. Marine Corps. Jones served in the Pacific, was stationed in Australia, and took part in the Battle of Peleliu, where he was wounded by a bomb blast on Palau. He earned the Purple Heart, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and other medals. Together, these five signatures represent service connected to several major Pacific campaigns of World War II, including Bougainville, Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Okinawa, the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein, Enewetak, New Georgia, New Caledonia, and Emirau. Signatures have not been third-party authenticated; offered as a signed historical association copy based on visible ink signatures, accompanying service inscriptions, and public records for the named Code Talkers. Near Fine softcover in pictorial wrappers. Binding tight, square, and solid. Text block clean and bright, with no highlighting, ownership marks, marginalia, underlining, or internal writing other than the historically significant signatures and service notations on the title page. Covers remain bright with only minimal handling wear. A clean, well-preserved copy with exceptional signed historical association. Signed by Author(s).
