It also beheld the first sinking of an enemy ship by a submarine. The CSS Hunley's success off Charleston, South Carolina against the USS Housatonic is well documented. What has never been written of before, however, is that the little ill~fated Hunley was but one of a large number of operational Civil War submarines.
