Inscribed by the author to the half-title "For Ben - from Dubai, where Kate did so much to help me with this book. December 1996" and signed by him in shorthand. This may be Kate John, who is credited as one of his editors. Codrai is best known for his "Arabian Albums" of photographs of the Trucial Sheikhdoms and Oman, taken whilst he was a political agent for the Iraq Petroleum Company and its subsidiaries, which involved travelling extensively around the region from his base in Dubai. This album contains a much wider selection, dating from 1946 when he was first posted to Cairo after serving in the RAF, to 1993 when he was presented with the UAE's Sultan Al Owais Literary Award. The reference to one second in the title refers to the average shutter speed of 1/100th of a second, amounting to 1 second over a half century. The images are from Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, and UAE. Most are in colour, with some in the original b/w with sepia toning. Inscribed by Author(s).
