Both compounds are forms of soluble salts and it is always possible that some of these will be left within the masonry surface after cleaning where they will cause on-going deterior-ation. The alkali may be absorbed into a porous stone and brick or gain access through defective mortar joints. Much can be done to avoid alkaline cleaner related problems by cor-rect application and removal procedures, particularly thorough rinsing. Neutralization of alkaline cleaners on limestones with acetic acid does not completely eliminate the problem: it is still necessary to rinse thoroughly to ensure the salts produced in the reaction are themselves removed. Experience has shown that the probablility of harmful residues being left in the stone is higher when the use of the cleaner is not restricted to areas sufficiently small that they can be thoroughly rinsed with ease.
