Booklet. Zustand: Very good. Peter Dennis (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. 48 pages, plus covers. Illustrations. Maps. Further Reading. Decorative covers. Cover has minor wear and soiling. Previous owner's [Thomas E. and Brenda G. Corbin] bookplate inside the front cover. (Thomas E. Corbin was the great grandson of Private Elbert Corbin--who served in the First New York Light Artillery and participated in the Battle of Gettysburg). Military historian Paddy Griffith looks at the problems faced by the commanders in this fascinating conflict and examines in detail how they overcame them. Working closely with illustrator Peter Dennis, Dr. Griffith reveals in a new and exciting way the mechanisms of command, the instruments of victory and of defeat during those four terrible years. Paddy Griffith (4 February 1947, Liverpool, England - 25 June 2010) was a British military theorist and historian, who authored numerous books in the field of War Studies. He was also a wargame designer for the UK Ministry of Defence, and a leading figure in the wargaming community. Griffith was a freelance military historian and a prolific author on military history and tactics. He was a lecturer and then senior lecturer at RMA Sandhurst from 1973 to 1989. In Forward into Battle: Fighting Tactics from Waterloo to Vietnam (1981), Griffith put forward ideas about the "empty battlefield" or how increased fire-power had led to military formations becoming increasingly disaggregated. The conclusion he drew was that the willingness to close with the enemy was a key factor. It proved to be a highly influential work. Battle in the Civil War is a step-by-step explanation of how the Blue and Gray armies squared up to fight each other; how they maneuvered on the battlefield and what happened when they came to close combat. It is a concise summary of the art of war in that conflict.
