VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Fit for Human Consumption by Ian Walton Summary: Rather than telling one continuous story, the book presents a series of individual poems. Walton observes everyday people and situations with a mixture of wit, honesty and compassion. His poems can be provocative or "contentious," but they are also warm and intimate, often finding humour in experiences that might otherwise seem difficult or painful. The collection is influenced by Walton's own unusual life experiences. He was born in Leicester, worked in the Merchant Navy as a cook from the age of 17, travelled extensively, worked in publishing and advertising, and at one-point experienced homelessness with his family. These experiences help explain the book's interest in real people, struggle, relationships and the less polished side of everyday life. Fit for Human Consumption is an observant, sometimes humorous and sometimes challenging collection about what it means to be human, with Walton turning ordinary experiences and people into thoughtful poetry.
