Zustand: Sehr gut. 80 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Texte engl. - Picasso is acknowledged as one of the great revolutionary modern painters. Less widely appreciated is the fact that he was equally revolutionary and influential as a sculptor. The Tate Gallery has created an exhibition and catalogues which both presents Picasso's sculpture to a new generation and makes the first attempt to relate it to his painting. The exhibition sets out to show how Picasso's sculpture was nourished by his work in two dimensions, but, more surprisingly, also how his sculpture often fed back into his painting, altering and enriching it. Even more than his painting, Picasso's sculpture reveals his extraordinary inventiveness and originality - both in his use of materials and in his continual transformations of reality into new and compelling forms of art. In his Cubist collages and constructions he established the idea that art could be made from any materials the artist chooses and that sculpture could be constructed, rather than carved or modelled. In his art generally he established that reality may be treated in art in any way the artist pleases. These principles have had an enormous influence on subsequent art. In particular many of the most radical forms of modern sculpture have their origins in the work of Picasso. Picasso's sculptures had a special importance for him: he parted with few in his lifetime and then with reluctance. His paintings he always sold much more freely. It is partly for this reason that the sculpture remained for so long so relatively little known and so critically disregarded.
