Christopher Saxton was responsible for creating the first printed atlas of the English and Welsh counties, which, when published in 1579, was the first uniform national atlas ever produced for any country. The original set of…maps from which this edition is prepared is held in the Library of Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. Not only is it one of the finest hand-coloured examples to survive, but it is also one of only three known privately owned copies. The introduction by William Ravenhill explores the fascinating context in which the maps were created, as well as the methods and techniques used by Saxton to produce his masterpiece.
