Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Heath Robinson (cartoonist) and Dot Little (cover (illustrator). 128 pages. Illustrated endpapers. No dust jacket present. Heath Robinson's Home Front sees the well-loved cartoonist working in collaboration with the writer and humorist Cecil Hunt. Together, they offer hopelessly impractical solutions to some of the most perplexing problems of the day. Pity the poor Briton advised to play his weekly bridge tournament while wearing a gas mask, the gardener who substitutes a complex configuration of magnets in the shortage of simple pea-sticks, or the motorist who must find a way to power her vehicle without gasoline. The result is an amusingly idiosyncratic celebration of the British population's remarkable ability to "make do and mend." Heath Robinson was a household name in Britain, and millions of readers around the world continue to thoroughly enjoy his cartoons today. A classic military-themed compendium, Heath Robinson's Home Front will be a favorite with fans of the cartoonist's complicated, fanciful contraptions. William Heath Robinson (31 May 1872 - 13 September 1944) was an English cartoonist, illustrator and artist who drew whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives. The earliest citation in the Oxford English Dictionary for the use of "Heath Robinson" as a noun describing any unnecessarily complex and implausible contrivance is from 1917. The phrase "Heath Robinson contraption" perhaps most commonly describes temporary fixes using ingenuity and whatever is to hand, often string and tape, or unlikely cannibalizations. Its continuing popularity was likely linked to Britain's shortages during the Second World War and the need to "make do and mend". One of the automatic analysis machines built for Bletchley Park during the Second World War to assist in the decryption of German message traffic was named "Heath Robinson" in his honor. It was a direct predecessor to the Colossus, the world's first programmable digital electronic computer. Horace Cecil Hunt (13 September 1902 - 13 July 1954) was an English journalist, editor, novelist and anthologist, who is best known for his collections of unintended errors made by British schoolchildren in their examinations and written work, commonly known as 'howlers'. Hunt collaborated with two notable artists. First, with Edmund Blampied, who illustrated three collections of children's howlers and an anthology of proverbs. He also collaborated with W. Heath Robinson on three illustrated books published during the Second World War, all illustrated with Robinson's typically complicated and fanciful contraptions.
