We propose to show that th…e patient is not the innocent victim of some quirk of nature, but actually the author of his or her own sickness. Thus, we shall not be addressing ourselves to environmental pollution, the ills of civilisation, unhealthy living or similar familiar scape- goats; instead we propose to bring the metaphysical aspect of illness to the fore. From this viewpoint symptoms are seen to be bodily expressions of psychological conflicts, able through their symbolism to reveal the patient's current problems. In the first part of this book we therefore present the theoretical presuppositions underlying this approach and ex- pound a philosophy of illness.
