Neuware - '.many excellent period photos and color profiles and you get an exceptionally well researched book.' - ModelingMadness.ComAir Battles Over the Baltic Volume 1 offers a meticulously researched examination of the Soviet Air Forces in the Baltic Special Military District during the critical period leading up to the German invasion on 22 June 1941. Drawing extensively on previously restricted Soviet and German archival material, Mikhail Timin reconstructs the composition, training, and combat readiness of the Red Army's aviation units as they prepared for what would become the opening phase of the Great Patriotic War.The study explores both the rapid expansion of Soviet air power and its systemic weaknesses. It examines the deployment of air units into Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia following their incorporation into the Soviet sphere, while analysing the challenges posed by inadequate infrastructure, logistical shortfalls, and the hurried training of thousands of newly graduated pilots. These developments are placed within a wider strategic and political context, including the lessons of the Winter War with Finland and the looming threat of German attack.Richly illustrated with rare photographs, detailed colour profiles, and maps, this volume also brings a human dimension to the story through biographical material on key personnel. It is an essential resource for understanding the strengths, limitations, and vulnerabilities of Soviet air power on the eve of war. This revised and expanded edition features enhanced colour profile captions, additional photographs--including material on pro-Soviet demonstrations in the Baltic states and ground support vehicles at Soviet airfields--and new analytical content examining lessons drawn by the Soviet Air Force from the Winter War. It also includes an expanded series bibliography, further strengthening the volume's value as both a reference work and a study of early Eastern Front operations.…
