Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Not applicable. 1st Edition. VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Chieftain Main Battle Tank 1966 to present by Dick Taylor. Haynes Owners Workshop Manual Summary: Haynes book is both a history of the Chieftain tank and an illustrated technical guide. It follows the tank from its introd…uction into British Army service in 1966 through its development, upgrades, overseas use and eventual replacement. The Chieftain (FV4201) was designed to replace Britain's Centurion medium tank and Conqueror heavy tank, becoming the mainstay of British armoured forces during the Cold War. Its design emphasised heavy protection and firepower, most notably the powerful 120 mm L11 rifled gun. It also introduced unusual features such as the driver's reclining position, which allowed a lower hull profile. A major theme of the book is the continuous evolution of the Chieftain. Taylor describes successive marks and improvements to the engine, transmission, sights, fire-control equipment, armour and communications. Later tanks received a laser rangefinder, improved fire-control computer, thermal sights and Stillbrew appliqué armour, significantly extending the tank's battlefield effectiveness. Taylor also discusses the Chieftain's strengths and weaknesses. Its 120 mm gun and armour were formidable, but the Leyland L60 multi-fuel engine became notorious for reliability problems and required continual development. The book therefore gives a useful picture of the compromises involved in operating a sophisticated Cold War tank. The Chieftain was not limited to the British Army. More than 2,200 vehicles of all types were produced, with approximately 900 serving Britain and around 1,300 exported, notably to Iran, Jordan, Kuwait and Oman. Iranian Chieftains saw extensive combat during the Iran-Iraq War, while Kuwaiti Chieftains fought during Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. British specialist Chieftain vehicles also participated in the 1991 Gulf War. An important part of the book is the wide family of vehicles based on the Chieftain chassis, including armoured recovery vehicles, bridge-layers and combat-engineering vehicles. This demonstrates that the Chieftain's usefulness continued beyond its role as a gun tank. Author: Dick Taylor Publisher: J.H. Haynes & Co Ltd.
