Boschwitz (1915-1942) left his native Germany for Oslo and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, and wrote two novels. He settled in England in 1939 but was interned, despite his Jewish background, as an enemy alien and subsequently shipped to Australia. He was allowed to return to England but his ship was torpedoed by a German submarine and he was killed, along with all 362 passengers.

Afterword by Peter Graf. xv, 266pp. (Boschwitz's novel 'Der Reisende,' set in the aftermath of 'Kristallnacht' in 1938, was published in Germany in 2018 to huge international acclaim, having been restored from the original typescript reposing in a Frankfurt archive. Previously published in England and America, in 1939 and 1940 respectively, thence forgotten, this is the translation of the restored version. The Afterword to the German edition, by the typescript's editor Peter Graf, is included. Boschwitz died in 1942, aged 27, when the ship transporting him to England was torpedoed by a German submarine.).
