The narrator is wasted and fumbling through his thoughts, fearing some dark force is tearing its way through each of their minds because of a previous trip he had months earlier he believes to have been prophetic. He is confused and this spills into the storytelling as he rambles of this 'demon' breaking through his 'shadow' in his subconscious. His paranoia persists and he soon recognizes the 'demon' in his friends. His derangement is the basis of the narration, so at times the reader may seem confused as well - but the ending ties everything together nicely so that you can take a breath afterwards.
