In it is found a total of 61 essays. These particular essays were chosen, as the title page says, by Dorothy Collins, Chestertons long-time secretary. W. E. Williamss A Book of English Essays, which Penguin published in 1942, contains 64 essays, of which three are by Francis Bacon, seven by Joseph Addison, and six by Charles Lamb, all of whom stand at the origin of English language essays, as Montaigne does of the French essay. The 1959 Selected Essays of Belloc, which was edited by J. B. Morton and published by Penguin, lists 42 essays. Joseph Epsteins Familiar Essays, entitled The Middle of My Tether, only collects 15 somewhat longer essays, while the Penguin 2003 Selected Essays of Samuel Johnson reproduces some 122 essays of this great man. This Schall selection totals 53 essays. It is not a mystical number. I did not add 61, 64, 15, and 122 and divide by four to get 53. You actually get 66 %, not a helpful number page-wise. But still, 53 is a goodly number. It is not too long, but provides enough variety to catch the wonder of the essay form of letters. My earlier book, Idylls and Rambles: Lighter Christian Essays, has 54 essays. That number was chosen precisely because it corresponded with the 1949 Methuen collection of Bellocs Selected Essays. As I said then, and repeat here, Belloc is the best of essayists. His short essays in Hills and the Sea, Places, Towns of Destiny are simply magic. The title of this book comes from the first essay, The Classical Moment - a moment originally recorded in a back yard in Cape Town, South Africa. The third essay makes a similar point, this time occasioned by the Welsh poet David Jones. The sub-title is also accurate. These essays, which, as is only just, conclude with Samuel Johnson on the very nature of things that end, are selected because, more or less, each in its own way touches on Knowing and Its Pleasures. I was indeed tempted to entitle the book What Philosophers Play With, the title of the second from the last essay. And that too is a subject which runs through all these essays, the concern of philosophers about the things that are, about the things that fascinate and move us. One cannot, I suspect, be a philosopher at all without a classic moment in his experience, something with which, I am sure, neither Plato nor Augustine would have any hesitation in agreeing. A book of selected essays is, I think, its own literary form. It is not like other books. This is its glory. There are, no doubt, long and short essays. There are sober essays, also what I call lightsome ones, and many that have a bit of both in them. I have no idea how many short essays I have written over the years, hundreds and hundreds for sure. I love the short essay best, I think, because it allows one to write about just about anything. Belloc, in fact, has an essay entitled On Everything. The intellect, as Aristotle said, is in fact capable of knowing all that is The essay is something of a proof of this insight. It does justice both to necessary and unnecessary things. Such is a dangerous freedom, no doubt. The essay is not, as such, exempt from the pursuit of truth, even if that truth exists in it in fantasy or humor or imagination. Two previous books of mine, Idylls and Rambles and Schall on Chesterton, are likewise collections of the sort of short essay that I love to write. The Praise of Sons of Bitches and Another Sort of Learning are also collections of short essays. Unexpected Meditations Late in the XXth.
