Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. x, 303, [7] pages. Map. Figures. Glossary. Index. Inscribed by the author on the title page. The inscription reads To: Russell Preble, with my warm regards Capt. Bill Ruhe 2/28/97. "Reality and intensity are the chief watchwords of this unique and highly personal memoir of World War II submarine combat in the Southwest Pacific."--Seapower. This book is based on the author's journal on eight action-filled patrols against the Japanese in the South Pacific. Foreword by Tom Clancy. A graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1939, Captain William. J. Ruhe, U. S. Navy (Retired), served in submarines during World War II and later commanded the submarine Sturgeon and Seadevil. Following a tour in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, he commanded the destroyer Beale, Destroyer Division 262, Submarine Division 22, and the USS Topeka, in Vietnamese waters during the initial escalation in 1964. From 1960 to 1962, he was Deputy Director of the Strategic Plans Division in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and during this period served on the first major systems analysis ASW study. Later, as a member of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Special Study Group, he was project officer for the Navy's first General Purpose Forces Study. In 1965, he was project officer for the Navy's major ASW Study, Cyclops II, and finally served two years as Deputy Director Navy Program Planning prior to retiring in December 1967. He was consultant to the President's Commission for Marine Science, Engineering and Resources, until September 1968, when he joined General Dynamics. Submarine duty in World War II was extraordinarily nearly 22 percent of all American submariners who fought lost their lives. What kind of man could face these odds, day after day, in a cramped, leaky vessel hundreds of feet below the surface? Bill Ruhe was one of them. A twenty-six-year-old ensign just three years out of the Naval Academy, he kept a journal on eight action-filled patrols against the Japanese in the South Pacific. Based on his colorful and meticulous notes, War in the Boats vividly describes a unique form of combat and the courageous individuals who could withstand its extreme pressures. The author's combat operations ran the gamut of submarine actions in the Pacific war. His battles were fought in the three main types of American submarines, or "boats" as submariners called them. Because his experiences were so extensive, his book is one of the most inclusive descriptions of the undersea war against Japan. Moreover, War in the Boats is not the dry work of a professional historian. It is a young, observant officer's impressions of the conflict's effect on a tightly knit and interdependent group of men. A compelling and exciting true story. Inscribed to Russell A. Preble, presumably a descendant of Edward Preble (August 15, 1761 August 25, 1807) who was an American naval officer who served in the American Revolutionary War and the First Barbary War, leading attacks on Tripoli and forming the officer corps that would go on to command the United States Navy during the War of 1812.
