Einband leicht berieben. - The Whanki Museum, built in 1992, commemorates and houses the works of Kim Whanki, a painter and pioneer of modern art in Korea. With its combination of lyricism and logic, its evocation of nature and its meticulous construction of order, the museum gracefully embodies the spirit of the painter. At the same time, it is emblematic of the design philosophy of its architect, Kyu Sung Woo. Woo, a Korean-born architect working in the United States, grew up in Seoul and Kaesung (now part of North Korea) during the turbulent period of Korean history that followed the end of the Korean War. After graduating from Seoul National University with a degree in architecture in 1963, he worked at the Institute of Housing, Urban and Regional Planning under the Korean Ministry of Construction. There, Woo met American architect Oswald Nagler, who trained him in urban design and later encouraged him to continue his studies in the United States. Woo came to the United States to study at Columbia University in 1967. At Columbia, he was particularly influenced by the philosophy of Victor Christ-Janer, who emphasized the importance of a substructural or "primal imagery." It was also during this time that Woo met artist Kim Whanki. Woo continued his architectural studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he met Jose Luis Sert. Upon graduation he entered Serfs architectural office. During the five-year period in which he worked closely with Sert, Woo gained an education in design that would greatly inform his later techniques and practices.
