Emile Gallé's place in the history of French Art Nouveau design is an exalted one. The son of a pottery owner and ceramics vendor, the young Gallé studied both botany and glassmaking. eventually setting up his own glass workshop in his home town of Nancy. A prolific designer of glass, ceramics and furniture, Gallé was one of the founders of the 'Alliance Provinciale des Industries d'Art', better known as the Ecole de Nancy arm of Art Nouveau, which also included Victor Prouvé and Louis Majorelle. Gallé produced some of the most beautiful Art Nouveau objets in any medium, and certainly the most outstanding works in glass. Gallé's vases, goblets, lamps and other glass pieces, as well as his tables, beds, vitrines, cabinets and other pieces of furniture these usually featuring elaborate mar- quetry designs landscapes, stillifes and the like - were very much ruled by the master's love of nature, which he reproduced with botanical, zoological and entomological precision. Among the loveliest and rarest Gallé works are his dragonfly tables - massive insects forming carved-wood or cast-bronze legs and mounts on the furniture - and his unique sculptural pieces in layered glass, often accompanied by a Symbolist line or whole poem etched onto their surfaces. Gallé was indeed a poet in glass, with a vision both distinctive and influential, and very much at the forefront of the era. The Art of Emile Gallé, beautifully illustrated in full color throughout, re- views Gallé's vast output in glass, pottery and wood, chronicles his participation in and success at various international exhibitions, analyzes his devotion to nature, and focuses on his significant position in the sphere of both Art Nouveau design and modern glassmaking.
