NOT IN JLF'S HAND/ Joan Elizabeth Eyres Monsell (1912Ð2003) was an English photographer. She married John Rayner, Features Editor of the Daily Express, in 1939, and later became the wife of author Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor. Her photographs appeared, often uncredited, in several of the Shell Guides Betjeman was editing, also in Architectural Review, and various books and magazines. At the outbreak of WW2 she was commissioned to photograph the heritage considered most at risk from German bombs, though with the onset of the Blitz this turned into a record of the damage done, her work appearing magazines like Horizon. Joan "was the archetypal rebellious daughter of privilege, moving in artistic circles, friends with Cyril Connolly, John Betjeman, Lucien Freud, Kenneth Clark and Osbert Lancaster and so on, and sleeping around with those of them who werenÕt gay. When she married the journalist John Rayner in the late-1930s, he was monogamous, she wasnÕt; the marriage did not last."Paul Kincaid / John Rayner is also known for writing the Shell Guide 'Towards A Dictionary Of The County Of Southampton, Commonly Called Hampshire Or Hants.'
