Steven Dane Russell (born May 25, 1963) is a retired American soldier and politician. Russell served 21 years in airborne, light and mechanized assignments in the Arctic, the desert, the Pacific, in Europe and in the Continental United States. He served more than seven years overseas and deployed operationally to Kosovo, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. As a soldier, he played a significant role in the capture of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. His unit was a central player in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein and has been featured in the Discovery Channel's Ace in the Hole. Later, as a Republican, he represented Oklahoma's 5th congressional district (Oklahoma City) in the United States House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 and was a former member of the Oklahoma Senate from 2009-2013. Derived from a Kirkus review: The events in December 2003 produced predictions that they would end the increasingly bloody insurgency. This didn't happen, and the event is now considered a historical footnote. However, it was not a footnote in the career of former Lt. Col. Russell, who provides an account of his battalion's actions from May 2003 to February 2004. According to Russell, after Hussein's defeat he went underground to orchestrate a bitter insurgency designed to wear down American forces. The author is clearly a professional focused on crushing the enemy, and he writes a nearly day-by-day chronicle of patrols, raids, skirmishes and intelligence gathering while tracking and capturing Hussein's high-level henchmen and eventually the dictator himself. A dedicated officer, he loves his men, agonizes when they suffer, never doubts that they fought to defend America, and does not hide his contempt for those who felt otherwise. Readers will encounter a vivid, nuts-and-bolts account of small-unit tactics during the early years of the Iraq insurgency.
