Gerhard Freund, MD, Full Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Neuroscience was born in Frankfurt/Main Germany, he earned his med…ical degree from Goethe University Medical School in Frankfurt. His medical internship was in Ottawa, Canada followed by residencies in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He joined the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois. In 1963 he became a faculty member of the Department of Medicine of the University of Florida College of Medicine. He received a joint faculty appointment in the Department of Neuroscience in 1967. Dr. Freund developed the first animal model of alcohol addiction. He was Co-Director of the University of Florida Alcohol Research Center. Dr. Freund was Chief of the Endocrinology Service of the Veterans Administration Medical Center. He published a memoir about his life entitled- 'The Sun Kept Rising: Adventures of an Immigrant'. In this compelling memoir a boy grows up with the ideology of the Hitler Youth and the opposing values of his parents. At age 16 he operates an anti-aircraft cannon, then survives the horrors of the Russian front and ends up in a POW camp. Against many odds he succeeds in an unconventional medical career in three different countries.
