The Bullmastiff was developed by interbreeding the English Mastiff and the Old English Bulldog. The breed is commonly known as the 'Gamekeeper's Night Dog' due to the fact that the breed rarely barks which makes it ideal for night time security According the breed standards of the American Kennel Club, a Bullmastiff's coat can only come in the following colorations: fawn (ranging from light brown to a slight reddish brown), red (ranging from a light fawn-red to a dark, rich red) or brindle (stripes over either a fawn or red base). Gamekeeper's would normally favor brindle coat colorations as it provides the Bullmastiff with effective camouflage at night. Bullmastiff are very popular household pets due to their intelligence, loyalty and trainability. As a whole the breed gets along well with children and other household pets, providing that the dog has been socialized properly from an early age.
