The author, clairvoyant Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854-1934), was a prominent member of the Theosophical Society, and a contemporary of founder Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and her successor Annie Besant. The Astral Plane was considered so important in the history of the Theosophical Society that the Masters of Wisdom requested the manuscript to be sent to the museum of history in the Himalayas, with the following reasoning: 'For the first time among occultists, a detailed investigation had been made of the astral plane as a whole, in a manner similar to that in which a botanist in an Amazonian jungle would set to work in order to classify its trees, plants and shrubs, and so write a botanical history of the jungle.
