His Why Judges Wear Robes is one fine book, a perfect mix of wisd…om, humor, insight and entertainment."; Retired Campbell County Circuit Judge J. Samuel Johnston apparently has a local runaway bestseller on his hands with a self-published collection of laugh-out-loud stories about life in the courtroom. He sold out of the first run of 650 copies, selling them himself at book signings and at his home. "My house looked like a crack house, with people coming and going all day," he said. An Alabama native who earned his law degree at the University of Virginia, Johnston practiced only four years before going on the general district bench in 1977. He was the youngest district court judge in Virginia, and held the same distinction as a circuit judge when he was elevated to that court in 1981. The book offers collections of short stories - some charming, some thought-provoking, but most wickedly funny. The consistent style lifts the language well above that of most self-published works. A word of caution - some of Johnston's humor derives from the earthy language of the criminal defendants who visited his courtroom. "Why Judges Wear Robes" may not be the best choice to show Mom how entertaining law practice is. Nevertheless, Johnston uses a rifle, not a shotgun, when he takes aim with the R-rated words. He sprinkles the salty language-not for any forced "atmosphere"-but only to hit the mark with his punch lines. For someone who has signed the death warrants for four men, Johnston deliberately sticks to the lighter side for this collection of memoirs. "I left out all the gruesome stuff. I didn't put any murders, rapes or robberies in there. I wanted people to laugh, not cry," he said, adding, "Believe me, there's plenty to cry about in court." --Peter Vieth, VA Lawyers Weekly, 2010 ; SIGNED presentation on title page ; FINE. Book.
